Suggested Programs For National Minority Health Month
  • Endowed Chair Program
One of the goals in the NMHM agenda is to increase the number of minority health care providers. Often this will mean going into our elementary schools, middle schools, churches and community groups and redirecting students into the world of science and research. One of the ways to do this is an innovative program designed with the "each one, teach one" mindset. The details of the program are in the web site under www.nmhm.org. MHC, Inc. will serve as the Center for Endowment and will assist whatever venue is chosen as the recipient of the endowment in providing and expanding the necessary steps in sponsoring the child after the chair has been endowed.

  • Minority Health Professional Recognition And Awards Dinner
In a continued effort to increase the number of minority providers, it will be prudent during the month to acknowledge one or more minority provider who can serve as an example to the youth of today by receiving an award that allows continued work in his chosen field. With the recognition comes a new position of a mentor who is introduced to the winner of a science award during a celebration and encouraged to support until the next celebration.

  • Youth Division Of National Minority Health Month
The youth must become involved in the work of eliminating the health disparity. It will be necessary to interest youth early on in ways that the disparity can be eliminated, so that they can use the information as they grow older. It will be important to form an autonomous youth chapter of the NMHM that will allow them the space, creativity and originality to gain their own set of stakeholders and raise the awareness about eliminating the disparity among their peers.

We recommend that a youth chapter be started, adequately funded by the federal government, with our best and brightest youth leaders from across the country, in all socioeconomic classes, investing ideas and programs into the project. It is suggested that communities be offered the opportunity to name the youths for this division of NMHM

  • Create A Health Report Card For Your Community
A report card on the health of the minority community within the target area of a community-based organization is important information for health departments and media, alike. In the end, it describes the effectiveness of the initiatives in the community that are in place to eliminate the disparities. National Minority Health Month is an excellent opportunity to bring the data to the surface and create activity and interest in the community and in the larger community through the media.

  • Sponsor Activities Within The Faith Based Community
Assist the faith community in learning about the disparity through the health educators and health professionals in the congregations. The faith based community should open its doors and create the necessary space to hold meetings, screen potential patients and educate youth. Their most important role is to educate their congregation about the problem of the disparity and the ways in which the members can assist in eliminating the problem.
