Would it be cannibalism to eat the placenta?

We Answered:

EEEWWWW!!!!! THIS IS SO GROSS!!!!!
Why would you want to do this? You could eat just about anything but that does NOT mean it's a good idea! I doubt it would be considered cannibalism any more than eating poop - it's just something your body created and then cast off when it was no longer needed. But it's DISGUSTING! It was not created to be eaten!

Cannibalism is the act or practice of eating members of one's own species and usually refers to humans eating other humans (sometimes called anthropophagy) though it sometimes means 'to scavenge' (ie to cannibalize spare parts means to scavenge for spare parts). Cannibalism has been attributed to many different tribes and ethnicities in the past, but the degree to which it has actually occurred and been socially sanctioned is an extremely controversial topic in anthropology, owing to the extreme taboo against its practice in most cultures. Some anthropologists argue that cannibalism has been almost non-existent and view claims of cannibalism with extreme skepticism, while others argue that the practice was common in pre-state societies.

Most placental mammals participate in placentophagy (eating the placenta after birth), so why don't humans?

We Answered:

Some people do this with it: http://www.inhabitots.com/2009/10/01/doi…

Not my thing, though I do think the idea of using it as compost or planting it under a rosebush is nifty.

Whats a good recipe for human placenta?

We Answered:

Yes, I agree with Mikey - treat it like offal and fry it. Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall cooked placenta this way on his tv cookery show, and then served it with focaccia bread.

Given the job done by the Placenta do you think we should revere it and save it after birth?

We Answered:

Placenta Cocktail:
1/4 cup raw placenta
8oz V-8 juice
2 ice cubes
1/2 cup carrot.
Blend at high speed for 10 seconds

Placenta Lasagne:
Use your favorite Lasagne recipe and substitute this mixture for one layer of cheese. In 2 tbl. olive oil, quickly saute meat of 3/4 placenta, ground or minced; plus 2 sliced cloves of garlic, 1/2 tsp. oregano, 1/2 diced onion & 2 tbl. tomato paste, or 1 whole tomato.

Placenta Pizza:
Grind placenta. Saute in 2 tbl. olive oil with 4 garlic cloves, then add 1/4 tsp. fennel, 1/4 tsp. pepper, 1/4 tsp. paprika, 1/4 tsp. salt, 1/2 tsp. oregano, 1/4 tsp. thyme, and 1/4 cup of wine. Allow to stand for 30 minutes, then use with your favorite home made pizza recipe. It's a fine placenta sausage topping.
