PhRMA Praises Congressional Leadership Alliance
Washington, D.C. (Tuesday, February 8, 2005) – The Chief Medical Officer of the
Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, Dr. Paul Antony, MD, MPH, made the
following statement today hailing the inauguration of the Congressional Leadership Alliance to
Eliminate Health Disparities:
“Every American should have access to the health care and medicines they need. The
Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) supports the National Minority
Health Month Foundation’s work to end health care disparities. Health care disparities arise not
only when health care is unavailable but also from “one-size” fits all solutions that do not account
for individual needs. One way to eliminate health care disparities is to ensure all patients have
access to the health care they need. It is critical that patients and physicians have the freedom to
choose the treatments that are right for each individual.
Today, we salute NMHMF’s creation of the Congressional Leadership Alliance to Eliminate Health
Disparities. The Congressional Leadership Alliance is marshalling some of the best and most
creative minds to focus on eliminating health care disparities. At PhRMA, we are excited that the
experienced and talented men and women in the Congressional Leadership Alliance and the
NMHMF will be turning their considerable talents to solving some of the most difficult health care
challenges we face.
PhRMA supports NMHMF’s great work. The medicines made by our member companies play an
important role in helping to fight health care disparities. That is why our member companies’
patient assistance programs provided over 17 million free prescriptions to millions of American
patients in 2003 alone. Working together, I know that we will find creative and practical health
care solutions for all Americans.”
The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) represents the country’s
leading pharmaceutical research and biotechnology companies, which are devoted to inventing
medicines that allow patients to live longer, healthier, and more productive lives. PhRMA
members invested an estimated $33.2 billion in 2003 in discovering and developing new
medicines. PhRMA companies are leading the way in the search for new cures.
