The two are very different and will give you different results. Jello is not stable at room temperature; even if you reduce the water dramatically, what you get is a rubbery result that Jello used in advertising yaers ago as "jiggles".Fruit pectin acts on the sugar and breaks it down, the end result is stable but very sticky. Without having the recipies to compare with it's almost an impossibility to understand how these will end up giving you something that mimics a typical commercially made gum drop
Try what you have and if it does not work, toss the bad recipie and try again.

Yikes- I hope your family isn't going to riot if they don't get the exact same ones!! Do you even know how many choc chip cookie recipes DON'T have brown sugar in them??? Like, none... Unless you can remember who gave you the recipe to begin with (or you find it lurking in under the pens and pencils in that famous kitchen drawer we all have.. ;P) I would suggest trying other choc chip bar recipes (can you try them out on the sly??? Like you've got tons of time, I'm sure...) until you find a similar one (sometimes, lacking br sugar I've simply replaced it with white sugar, cup for cup) and then decorate them as you always did.
