Molasses is black and contains all the original flavours of the sugar.
Golden syrup is purified and is closer to white sugar.
So Molasses will add a lot more flavours - a bit like treacle.
Molasses or treacle is a thick syrup by-product from the processing of the sugarcane or sugar beet into sugar. (In some parts of the U.S., "molasses" also refers to sorghum syrup.) The word molasses comes from the Portuguese word melaÃ§o, which is in turn the Greek mellas â€” honey. The quality of molasses depends on the maturity of the sugar cane or beet, the amount of sugar extracted, and the method of extraction.

175g (6oz) butter, softened, plus extra for greasing
3tbsp golden syrup
1tbsp black treacle
175g (6oz) light brown sugar
3 eggs, beaten
1/2 lemon, zest only
175g (6oz) self-raising flour
1. Grease a 1ltr pudding basin and drizzle in the syrup and treacle.
2. Cream sugar and butter together with a whisk until pale and fluffy. Add the eggs a bit at a time and beat well after each addition. Add the zest and flour, and gently fold to combine. Use the milk to loosen the mixture.
3. Pour into the prepared pudding basin and level. Cover with pleated greaseproof paper, then cover with foil and tie with string. Put in a pan of boiling water and steam for 2 hrs

We Answered:Have you tried asking on YA Italy if anyone knows where you can buy syrup? My daughter lives in the Middle East and says that the Brits working there are always posting questions on the M.E. YA about where to find things.
Someone is sure to know how, but in case they miss this, I would try boiling sugar down to make a sugar syrup as you do for sweetmaking.

3 Cups of white Sugar
1 Cup of full cream milk
1 tablespoon of golden Syrup
Pull all ingredients into a strong saucepan
Bring slowly to the boil, stirring all the time.
Allow to boil for 10 minutes, stirring
Take off the heat and Beat hard for 7 minutes or until quite sugary
Pour into a greased tine and allow to cool.
Before quite set, mark into squares with a knife.
when completely set and cold, break into pieces.
