How do i pick the basil leaves off my basil plant?

We Answered:

Pinch or cut them off about a quarter inch from the base of the leaf stem. This will leave any buds in place where a new stem can grow. I'm not sure about the discoloration issue. Unless you mean the remaining stem after cutting off the leaf turns dark, in which case I wouldn't be surprised.

BASIL,??????????????????????????????

We Answered:

Absolutely, the leaves loose the good flavor once it gets flowers, but, not all is lost. See below

The more you harvest, the more the plant will grow. When harvesting, pinch off the stem right above where a pair of leaves are growing. After you harvest, two more stems will start to grow, which means twice the leaves next time you harvest!

6.Remove flowers. Once a basil plant flowers, the leaves start to lose their good flavor. If you remove any flowers, the leaves will get their good flavor back in just a day or so.

Mattie Said:

How long shourld a basil plant grow before I can expect to use the basil leaves?

We Answered:

I grow it outdoors. It typically flowers in about 3 months. You can use the leaves at any time. Just don't strip the plant and kill it! The plant itself is good for 1 season. I find that it can go another season but it doesn't do as well as the 1st time around. The leaf color just shows how much nutrition the leaf is getting. The darker ones might have more flavor but I never been picky.

basil....?

We Answered:

First of all, have you planted in a garden,or in a pot?I find it's better planted in a plastic bucket.Full sun is ok,but sun can be very hot.Do not water every day.Water only when top of ground is dry, water well and at dusk,or when sun has gone down.If your plans are wilting, then I suggest, you shade them during hottest part of day.Drying leaves can be done in a microwave on a very low heat, or pop into a paper bag,and leave in an airing cupboard.

How to grow basil at home in a pot?

We Answered:

Rotting stems, to much water. Place in southern window full sun.Use ready mix potting soil with fertilizer for vegetables. Start in 3-4 inch pot. Keep seeds moist until the seeds begin to sprout. Then monitor daily. Being a beginner just buy a soil water senser it will tell you when water. Or allow the soil to be dry for 3 days before watering again. Once the plants are established. Temperture should be in the 70s.
